How can we help?

Answers to common questions about getting set up and making the most of OffTilt.

Getting Started

How do I create an account?

Just head to the sign-up page and create an account — no invite code needed.

After signing up, you'll receive a verification email. Click the link in that email to activate your account before logging in.

I signed up but haven't received a verification email.

Check your spam folder first — some email providers filter automated messages. If it's not there, you can request a new verification email from the login page by clicking "Resend verification email."

Note: resend is rate-limited to once every 2 minutes per account. If you're still not receiving it, contact us and we'll sort it out.

What do I set up first after logging in?

A good starting order:

  • Add your accounts — chequing, savings, credit cards, lines of credit. Enter the balance as of today.
  • Import transactions — either connect your bank via Plaid or upload a CSV from your online banking.
  • Set up your budget — review the default category structure and set monthly amounts for the categories that matter to you.
  • Add any manual assets (optional) — vehicles, RRSPs, investment accounts — anything not at a bank OffTilt can connect to.

You don't have to do it all at once. The app works fine with just manual transaction entry if that's where you want to start.

Is OffTilt available on mobile?

OffTilt is a web app, not a native mobile app. It works in your mobile browser and is designed to be usable on smaller screens, but there's no iOS or Android app yet. Native apps are planned for a future phase.

What browsers does OffTilt support?

OffTilt is tested on current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. If you're running something ancient, it will probably mostly work but we don't explicitly support it. Keep your browser reasonably up to date and you'll be fine.

Bank Sync

Which banks are supported for bank sync?

Bank sync uses Plaid, which supports most major Canadian financial institutions including CIBC, TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank, Tangerine, Simplii, EQ Bank, and many credit unions. If your bank isn't supported, CSV import works for everything — see the CSV Import section below.

Is bank sync safe? Does OffTilt see my banking password?

Your banking credentials go directly to Plaid — OffTilt never sees them. What we receive is an encrypted access token that lets us pull transaction and balance data on your behalf. Plaid is a well-established financial data provider used by thousands of apps.

If connecting a bank makes you uncomfortable, you can use OffTilt entirely through CSV import or manual entry. Bank sync is entirely optional.

How often does bank sync update?

You can trigger a manual sync from any connected account at any time using the sync button. Transactions from the last 30 days are pulled on each sync. Pending transactions are not included — only posted transactions appear.

I connected my bank but transactions aren't showing up.

A few things to check:

  • Make sure you clicked the sync button after connecting — transactions aren't pulled automatically on first connect.
  • Only posted transactions are imported. Pending transactions won't appear yet.
  • Some institutions have a delay of 1–2 business days before transactions are available via Plaid.
  • If you recently changed your banking password, the connection may have broken. Try using the "Reconnect" button found at the bottom of the accounts section.

If none of those apply, contact us with the name of your institution and we'll investigate.

How do I disconnect a bank account?

Use the "Disconnect" button at the bottom of the accounts section for the account you want to disconnect. This removes the Plaid connection and stops future syncs. Your existing imported transactions are not deleted. You can always reconnect later or switch to CSV import.

CSV Import

How do I export a CSV from my bank?

Most Canadian banks let you download transaction history from the account activity page. Look for an "Export" or "Download" option and choose CSV format. Common locations:

  • CIBC: Account Activity → Download → CSV
  • TD: Account History → Download Transactions → CSV
  • RBC: Account Activity → Download Transactions → CSV
  • BMO: Transaction History → Export → CSV
  • Scotiabank: Account Activity → Export → CSV

The exact steps vary slightly by bank and may change over time. If you're not sure, search "export transactions CSV" in your bank's help centre.

What format does the CSV need to be in?

OffTilt accepts CSVs in a variety of formats. During the upload step, you'll map your CSV columns to the required fields: date, description, and amount. As long as your file has those three pieces of information in some column, it will work.

Dates can be in most standard formats (YYYY-MM-DD, MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY). Amounts can be a single column with negatives for debits, or separate debit/credit columns — the importer handles both.

Will importing a CSV create duplicate transactions?

OffTilt uses a duplicate fingerprint based on the combination of account, date, amount, and description. If you import the same transaction twice, the second one is silently skipped. You can safely re-import a CSV that partially overlaps with existing data without getting duplicates.

Can I preview before the import goes through?

Yes. CSV import is a two-step process: upload and preview, then confirm. On the preview screen you'll see all the transactions that will be imported, any that will be skipped as duplicates, and the auto-categorization that has been applied. You can adjust mappings before confirming. Nothing is written to your account until you click Confirm.

I'm switching from YNAB, Actual Budget, Monarch Money, or Lunch Money. Can I bring my history with me?

Yes. OffTilt has built-in import presets for all four apps. On the CSV import screen, look for the "Migrating from another app?" section and select your previous app. The column mapping is handled automatically — no manual setup needed.

To export your transaction history from each app:

  • YNAB: Open your budget → select All Accounts → check the checkbox in the header to select all transactions → click More → Export Transactions. This exports a single CSV containing all your accounts. OffTilt will detect each account and let you map them to your OffTilt accounts before importing.
  • Actual Budget: Open an account → click the export icon in the top right of the account register. Repeat for each account you want to import.
  • Monarch Money: Go to Transactions → click the download icon at the top right to export all transactions as a CSV.
  • Lunch Money: Go to Transactions → click Export. Choose the date range you want and export as CSV.

Imported transactions arrive uncategorized and are run through OffTilt's auto-categorization engine automatically. You can review and adjust categories on the preview screen before confirming.

Note: you'll need to create your accounts in OffTilt before importing so you have somewhere to assign the transactions.

Transactions

How does auto-categorization work?

When transactions are imported (via CSV or bank sync), OffTilt runs them through two sets of rules:

  • System rules — built-in patterns covering hundreds of Canadian merchants: Tim Hortons, Costco, Loblaws, Bell, Rogers, and many more. These fire first.
  • Your rules — rules you create in Budget Settings → Rules. These use text matching against the payee field.

Auto-categorization is best-effort — it won't get everything right, especially for unusual payees or generic bank descriptions. You can always re-categorize manually, and the app will prompt you to create a rule to remember the pattern going forward.

How do I record a transfer between two of my own accounts?

Use the Transfer option when adding or editing a transaction. Select the other account and OffTilt will create a matching pair of transactions — a debit from one account and a credit to the other. Transfers are excluded from budget calculations so they don't distort your spending figures.

Can I split a transaction across multiple categories?

Transaction splitting isn't currently supported. As a workaround, you can manually create separate transactions for each portion. This is on the feature roadmap for a future release.

I deleted a transaction by mistake. Can I recover it?

Deleted transactions aren't recoverable from the UI. If you imported via CSV, re-importing the same file will bring it back since the duplicate check won't find a match anymore. If it was a manually entered transaction, you'll need to re-enter it. If it came from bank sync, triggering a sync will re-pull it from your bank.

Budgeting

What budget frequencies are supported?

OffTilt supports weekly, biweekly, annual, and monthly budgets. You set your preferred frequency in Account Settings. Budget amounts are normalized automatically so you can compare periods fairly — a $400 monthly budget displays as $184.62 on a biweekly view, for example.

What's the difference between income categories and expense categories?

Income categories (marked with an income flag) appear in the Income section of your budget. Their transactions add to your available amount rather than drawing from it. Everything else is an expense category. You can mark any category as income in Budget Settings → Categories.

Categories marked "exclude from budget" are invisible to budget math entirely. Their transactions still appear in the transaction list but don't count toward spending. The Savings group works this way by default.

How do I add, rename, or reorganize budget categories?

Go to Budget Settings → Categories. From there you can:

  • Create new parent groups or subcategories
  • Rename any category
  • Move a subcategory to a different parent group
  • Toggle income and exclude-from-budget flags
  • Delete categories (transactions are uncategorized, not deleted)
What happens if I go over budget in a category?

Nothing bad — OffTilt just shows the category in red with the overage amount. There are no penalties or locked features. The budget is a planning tool, not a hard cap. Going over in one category doesn't affect any other category.

Can I set different budget amounts for different months?

Budget amounts are set per category and apply to all periods by default. You can't currently set one-off overrides for specific months — the amount you set is the recurring target. If you have irregular expenses, you may prefer to set the budget to the average and expect some months to vary.

Net Worth

How is my net worth calculated?

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities. OffTilt pulls this from several sources automatically:

  • Account balances — your chequing, savings, and investment accounts (assets) plus credit cards and loans (liabilities).
  • Manual assets — anything you add manually: real estate value, vehicles, RRSPs, TFSAs at institutions not connected to OffTilt.
  • Mortgages — the outstanding balance on any mortgage you've added is included as a liability.
What are manual assets and how do I add them?

Manual assets are anything not automatically tracked through an account or mortgage — vehicles, physical property, investment accounts at institutions not connected via Plaid, RRSPs or TFSAs you manage yourself, etc.

Go to Net Worth → Add Asset. You give it a name, category, and current value. Update the value whenever it changes. Manual assets can also be liabilities — just enter a negative value (e.g., a private loan you owe).

How does the historical chart work?

OffTilt takes a daily snapshot of your net worth in the background. The historical chart shows how your net worth has changed over time. Snapshots only start from the date you created your account — historical data before that isn't reconstructed.

The chart goes back as far as your account history allows. Over time, you'll build up a meaningful picture of your financial trajectory.

Mortgages

Does OffTilt use correct Canadian mortgage math?

Yes. Canadian mortgages compound semi-annually, not monthly — OffTilt uses the correct effective monthly rate derived from semi-annual compounding as required by the Interest Act. Accelerated biweekly payments are calculated as annual payment ÷ 26, not monthly × 12 ÷ 26. CMHC mortgage default insurance is applied at the correct 5/10/15/20% down payment thresholds.

This matters because most US-built tools get the math wrong for Canadian mortgages. We built the math from scratch specifically for Canada.

How do I record a lump-sum prepayment?

Open the mortgage and select Add Prepayment. Enter the amount and the date it was applied. OffTilt will recalculate your amortization schedule from that point, showing the updated interest savings and adjusted payoff date.

Multiple prepayments are supported and cumulative savings are tracked. You can see how much each prepayment has saved you in interest over the life of the mortgage.

How do I handle a mortgage renewal?

When your term ends (or when you know the new rate in advance), use the Renew option on the mortgage. Enter the new rate, term length, and payment frequency. OffTilt will continue the amortization from the current outstanding balance — your payment history and prepayments are preserved.

If you have an upcoming rate that's confirmed in principle but not yet in effect, you can record it as a pending rate. The mortgage detail will show the pending rate with the effective date until it's confirmed.

What does "term ending soon" mean?

OffTilt flags mortgages with a term ending within 120 days to remind you to start shopping for renewal rates. Renewal rates in Canada are often available 120 days before the term ends, so this gives you the lead time to negotiate or shop around.

Goals

How do I create a savings goal?

Go to Goals → New Goal. Give it a name (e.g., "Emergency Fund", "House Down Payment"), a target amount, an optional target date, and link it to the account where you're saving. OffTilt will track the balance of that account as your progress toward the goal.

How is "on track" determined?

On track is calculated by comparing your current percent complete to the percent of time elapsed since the goal was created. If you're at 40% completion and 35% of the time to the deadline has passed, you're on track. If the percentages flip — 35% complete with 40% of time elapsed — you're behind.

Goals without a target date don't have an on-track calculation — they just show progress toward the amount.

Can I link multiple accounts to a single goal?

Not currently. Each goal is linked to one account. If you're saving across multiple accounts toward the same target, a workaround is to track the total manually by updating the goal amount or using a manual asset to represent the combined balance.

Settings

How do I change my account details?

Go to Account Settings (accessible from the bottom of the sidebar). From there you can update your name, password, and time zone.

How do I enable two-factor authentication?

Go to Account Settings → Enable Two-Factor Authentication. You'll scan a QR code with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, etc.) and confirm with a one-time code. You'll also receive 8 backup codes — save these somewhere safe. Each code can only be used once.

We strongly recommend enabling 2FA since OffTilt holds real financial data.

How do I delete all my data?

Go to Account Settings → Danger Zone → Clear All Financial Data. This permanently deletes all your accounts, transactions, budgets, goals, mortgages, and associated records. Your user account remains so you can start fresh; if you also want the account itself removed, you can do so using the "Delete Account" option.

Backups are retained for at least 90 days. Older backups are periodically cleared, but may persist longer in encrypted offsite storage.

What timezone does OffTilt use?

Your account timezone is set in Account Settings. It defaults to UTC. Set it to your local timezone so that transaction dates, budget periods, and the daily net worth snapshot all align with your day rather than UTC midnight.
